For those, I go back to them and try more severe adjustments, or send them to an Extension. Most will be fine after this, some might need more work. I run this through first on a new batch of images just to get an idea of what I've got. That just get's me basic adjustments done (it looks a lot, but can usually be done in a few seconds once you get a rhythm going). If you over do Sharpening, it can desaturate the colours quite a lot. For all three I try to ensure I apply only just enough to get the effect. Then I slide the Falloff to zero, and move it up until it gives just enough effect (if I can't see anything happening with this, I set it to around 0.5 - this can depend on the detail and subject matter in the photo). For this it's best to zoom in at 100%, then I hit Auto again (if you prefer set the Intensity and Falloff to 1.00 first, this simply exaggerates how the Edges adjustment appears), and then adjust Edges until it shows the detail I want to reveal. Then, if needed, I'll hit Auto on the 'Levels' and use that to get the overall look of the image right - I like the Levels panel in Photos, it seems to work pretty well, and has quarter adjustments too.įinally I apply some sharpening (if needed).

Check for any other auto adjustments made at this point, sometimes it can erroneously apply Skin Tone in the White Balance panel. I think the tool you were thinking of is RAW Power, which WAS created by the former Aperture guru. PowerPhotos is more about organization, not editing (although a good program). More generally, iPhoto, Aperture, and Photos all use OS X's imaging subsystem so, in theory at least, one should be able to obtain similar results.

I think photos is a big step backwards, but maybe I am just missing a key part of how to use it. Richer colors and saturation, better brightness adjustment and clarity. On my older Mac that had died, they came out so much better. I just find this program in my hands does a really poor job on editing older faded slides. In lieu of that, does anyone have a suggestion of a good "book" to use to learn these adjustments. Someone had suggested a couple of months ago that there might be an upgrade to the current version sometime this fall. For me the adjustments are not intuitive like they were in iPhoto versions. I have been scanning older slides for a couple of months now and am very frustrated with editing them in photos.
